Blog assignment #6 Iconic image

Blog assignment #6—Shaun Mayberry

(MARKETING) Iconic Image
-Mercedes Benz logo-

Mercedes Benz is a German manufacturer of automobiles, buses, coaches, and trucks. Its world-wide distribution has made it one of the most recognizable brands in today’s society. The logo represents a long line of respected customers and value. The logo signifies tradition, innovation, and the future.

The design of the Mercedes Benz logo is extremely historical and remarkable. The notable trademark, first developed and designed in 1909, has changed very little over the decades.  The logo still embellishes the character of quality and safety on roads as it did during its first establishment. The logo went through many changes including the addition of wreath symbolizing the formation of two companies, and also the silver design of the three pointed star to adapt to the turn of the century and the new brand name ‘Mercedes.’

The beginning of the company itself has also been a historical development. Benz & Cie. and DMG, both vehicle manufacturers of the early 1900’s were competitive rivals at the beginning. But owing to the economic crisis of World War I, both the companies decided to enter a ‘mutual agreement’ to sell their products under each others’ names. Thus the famous Mercedes Benz logo was created and used on the products of both companies (Edmounds.com). The Mercedes Benz logo has now become one of the world’s most recognized brands that symbolizes class, style and personality.

This image of the Mercedes Benz logo has changed through visual meaning and brand personality. Today the logo itself has been identified as trope in the ability that it is a metaphor for the high-class and value of a car. Throughout its history the logo has been recognized as a beginning manufacturer of vehicles towards “land, sea, and air” giving the three star logo its original meaning. But as time passed and future developments were built, the visual meaning of the logo changed. The logo went through many changes including the addition of wreath symbolizing the formation of two companies, and also the silver design of the three pointed star to adapt to the turn of the century and the new brand name ‘Mercedes.’ Early parts of the Mercedes Benz logo were seen as one of the largest and very few manufacturers of cars in the mid-90’s. But today the logo is represented as one the most valuable and high-class vehicles that can be purchased. The metonym signified in the logo is a symbol of long-valued history of a company that represents class and value. The changing of the visual and meaning has never steered the true theme of the company’s message.
